Engaged Capital in the Corona Crisis
Jonathan Oppenheimer is a South African businessman and philanthropist in the 4th generation of the Oppenheimer family, formerly the biggest shareholder of De Beers. He and his father Nicky Oppenheimer took early action against the socioeconomic effects of the Corona Crisis by setting up the South African Future Trust (SAFT), donating USD 50 million of their own funds. The SAFT has extended short term relief to over 100,000 employees of small businesses in the form of interest free loans. Once the funds are returned, they will be redeployed towards charitable initiatives supporting employment generation in South Africa.
